The idea of direct pumping of hydraulic fluid to high pressures, contained by a thin wall diaphragm or a fluid cell, for use in forming sheet metal motivated the design of the original “wheelon” press.
Fluid cell forming employs a soft rubber diaphragm filled with highly pressurized fluid to press flat metal blanks uniformly into and around a lower tool half, which can be a punch or die.
